Gyeonjgu's Underwater Tomb of King Munmu

A Beautiful Winter Destination in Gyeongsangbuk-do

Coastal areas may not be your usual winter destination but there are places by the sea that are worth going even during the cold winter days. Of course, people do not go there to swim but to enjoy the beauty of the winter sea.

Let me introduce one of the coastal places in Gyeongsangbuk-do which is worth going in winter.

This place is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Gyeongju and many people come here throughout the year. This place is called the Underwater Tomb of King Munmu of Silla (문무왕의 수중릉).

The Underwater Tomb of King Munmu of Silla (661-681 A.D.) is a little rocky islet which is estimated to be about 200 meters away from the shore at Bonggil-ri in Gyeongju.
King Munmu was the 30th ruler of Silla Dynasty. He was responsible for unifying the three kingdoms. Before his death, King Munmu gave specific instructions to his followers to be buried in the East Sea after his death so that he would become a dragon and protect Silla from Japanese invaders.

It is a rocky island which is about 200 meters in circumference. It is divided by a cross-shaped waterway which form a pool at the center, at the bottom of which is a granite stone 3.6 meters long, 2.9 meters wide and 0.9 meters thick. According to the legend, the remains of King Munmu’s cremated body are buried under this rock. However, historians still debate whether the ashes of the King Munmu were scattered or stored in an urn and placed under the rock. Nevertheless, it is currently listed as Historical Monument No. 158

This place is also known as Daewangam (대왕암) or The King’s Rock and is well-loved by photographers especially landscape photographers who love capturing the stunning sunrise scenery of this place.

This place especially attracts photographers in winter due to the perfect positioning of the sun which rises right the rocky island. The dramatic scenery created by the golden clouds,  the mist and the waves hitting the rough surface of the rocky islet is the real definition of perfection. So it is no wonder that photographers from various parts of the country brave the cold winter morning just to capture such grandeur.

Seaguls flying over the sea add beauty to the already stunning view.

In winter, the sun rises around 7:30. Thus, the best time to capture the stunning sunrise view is between 6:00 AM and 8:00 AM.
