Gosanseowon Confucian Academy was intended as permanent memorial for Sang-jeong Yi, a noted Confucian scholar of the 18th century. It was founded in 1789 (13th year of King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty) upon consensus of local Confucian scholars. Sang-jeong Yi passed national civil service examination at the age of 25 and was appointed minister of public works after going through many positions. However, he declined the offer and studied Neo-Confucianism succeeding the scholastic mantle of the prominent Confucian scholar Hwang Yi and educated young scholars. There were as many as 273 disciples registered according to his records of disciples.
