Yeonjiam Hermitage at 378, Hwalseong-ri, Oedong-eup, Gyeongu, is the subsidiary of the Bulguksa Temple, the main temple of the 11th parish of the Jogye Order. Nearby the hermitage is the Gwaereung Tomb, which is presumed to be that of King Wonseong, the ruler of Silla from the year 785 to 798. Take route no. 7 from downtown Gyeongju towards Ulsan to find the tomb. Before the tomb was constructed, there used to be a small pond on the site. According to the local legend, the body of the king was hung above the pond for burial, which gave the tomb the name of Gwaereung, or 'the tomb hung (above).'
