Althought the Baegnyulsa Temple in Gyeongju may look small and cozy now, it used to be one of the most flourishing temple in the Kingdom of Silla, as the temple is related to the martyr Lee Cha-don of Silla. When he was executed in 527 (14th year by the reign of King Beopheung) for propagating the new religion f Buddhism in the kingdom, his head flew high into the sky and fell down on the ground. On that ground, the Jachusa, the predecessor of today's Baegnyulsa Temple, was founded to pray for the soul of the martyr. Now the temple only has Daewoongjeon hall, which was renovated during the reign by King Seonjo of Chosun, seonwon hermitage, and dormitories for monks.
